Our mission is to empower and partner with individuals and communities to alleviate the hardships of poverty, provide opportunities for thriving and eliminate the root causes of poverty in southeastern Vermont.

The Board of Directors plays a pivotal role in guiding our mission to alleviate poverty, empower individuals, and strengthen communities across Southeastern Vermont. Consisting of representatives of three sectors of the community: the Private Sector (the business community), the Public Sector (publicly appointed officials), and most importantly, the Client Sector (representatives elected by the low-income community).

Who is welcomed to join the Board?

  • All people with lived experience of homelessness or have accessed any of SEVCA’s services. Essentially community members that best understand the perspective of those in need within our community will help inform our strategy from the client sector point of view.
  • All people that have a background in business will help inform our strategy from the private sector’s point of view.
  • Publicly appointed officials in any of our 43 service towns in Windham County and Windsor County will help lead strategy from the public sector point of view.

What is the job of a Board member?

Board members have a critical role in shaping SEVCA’s success and ensuring its long-term sustainability. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Strategic Oversight: Setting and maintaining the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic direction.
  • Financial Stewardship: Ensuring proper management of resources and approving budgets to maintain financial health.
  • Governance: Upholding accountability, transparency, and adherence to policies and ethical standards particularly with the Executive Director.
  • Advocacy: Representing SEVCA’s mission and advocating for community needs.
  • Fundraising: Supporting fundraising initiatives through personal contributions, networking, and outreach.
  • Community Engagement: Building connections with stakeholders and fostering partnerships to expand SEVCA’s impact.

What are expectations of a Board Member at SEVCA?

As a Board Member of the Southeastern Vermont Community Action (SEVCA), your responsibilities and expectations typically involve providing governance, oversight, and strategic direction to help the organization fulfill its mission. When are the meetings?

The third Wednesday of each Month from 4 – 6 pm. These meetings are mandatory for all Board members and are typically held remotely via Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

What is the duration of a board term?
