SEVCA Fall Appeal & Impact Stories - Give today!
For almost 60 years, SEVCA has been at the forefront of combating poverty in southeastern Vermont. This past year, we’ve provided services to 3,711 individuals; that’s an increase of 27 percent from two years ago. We’ve also helped our neighbors save over 110,000 gallons of heating oil and provided preschool education for 71 children.
As SEVCA’s Executive Director, I’ve seen firsthand how these statistics translate into powerful stories of empowerment and support. Our team works tirelessly to assist our neighbors and we are driven by the belief that poverty does not have to be a permanent condition. Here are just a few examples:
- Ann was spending $4,000 annually to heat her home in Westminster. She contacted our Weatherization team who assessed her home and helped reduce her heating costs by half, allowing her to keep more of her earnings and making her home safer and more energy- efficient. Ann was one of 776 households who received emergency repair and weatherization services last year. This aligns with SEVCA’s goal to provide equitable access to affordable energy and improve community resilience.
- Jenny, a single mom in Brattleboro, faced a utility shut off and eviction. SEVCA’s Family Services team worked with Jenny and her landlord to agree to a payment plan and cover her electric bill. We also helped Jenny develop a household budget, putting her on the path to financial stability. In addition to Jenny, Family Services helped 1,695 households keep their homes heated and electricity on; a core value of SEVCA’s mission to foster economic security for all.
- Jeff and Cathy of Chester enrolled their son in our Head Start program, where in addition to learning skills to be ready for kindergarten and beyond, our team worked together with the family to address the child’s speech and behavioral challenges. Supporting early childhood education is part of our commitment to ensuring equal access to high-quality education, giving every child the chance to thrive.
At SEVCA, we believe that poverty is not an individual failing but a result of systemic challenges. That’s why our efforts focus on fostering resilience in individuals, while working for what is needed for thriving communities—whether it’s affordable housing, energy access, or early childhood education. Your support can help us continue this vital work. Please make gift today.
